How do I use an oven thermometer?
I have just bought an oven thermometer and I'm not really sure how to use it. More specifically I want to know where I should stick it in the oven when I'm baking . And also, how quickly does it adjust to the current temperature? Is the temperature displayed really the current temperature of my oven?

Things You’ll Need: Meats Meat Thermometers Oven Thermometers Pot Holders Roasting Pans Roasting Racks Step1 Push the meat thermometer into the thickest section of the meat you are cooking before you place the meat in the oven. Step2 Make sure the thermometer is not touching bone, but is embedded deeply in the meat itself. Step3 Put the meat in the oven at the recommended temperature. Step4 Leave the meat thermometer in the meat throughout the cooking process. Step5 Check the meat thermometer as soon as the recommended cooking time for the cut of meat you are preparing is almost finished. The reading on the thermometer - check the levels for the kind of meat you are cooking - will indicate when the meat is cooked throughout. ************************ Tips : Meat thermometers come in a variety of styles, including dial types, probes and stand-up types of thermometers. Some probe thermometers allow you to connect the thermometer to a countertop unit that gives you the temperature reading without having to open the oven. Microwave-safe meat thermometers are also available. Get a meat thermometer that is dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning. Meat thermometers can be used for things other than measuring the temperature of meat. Some can - for example - check the temperature of water to be sure it's safe to add yeast, or check the internal temperature of warmed-over leftovers to be sure they're safe to eat. A meat thermometer gets hot in the oven. Use care when reading it or removing it after the meat comes out of the oven.

How do you check the temperature of an oven without an oven thermometer?
I remember seeing a method that used a meat thermometer and a oven proof measuring cup w/ 1 cup of water in it. I cannot remeber the particulars of how to do it. (what temp to set the oven at and how much temp change in the water in how much time)

Set it to 350 degrees. Place the meat thermometer in the water and in the oven. Then increase the temp. to 375 degrees in the next five minutes.

Is there an oven thermometer with a read-out outside the oven?
I have an old oven that has no window to see inside and doesn't tell you when it is preheated. I need a thermometer with a probe that goes inside the oven to read oven temperature (not to stick in the meat).

People did it for Years and years with out knowing "when the oven was preheated". Just give it 5-10 min, and go. There is no real need for the beeper alarm that notifies you when the oven is correctly preheated.

Will a meat thermometer work as an oven thermometer?
I allready have a meat thermometer and was wondering if i could use it for the oven temp. Just to get a ballpark figure?

NO, you will kill it, it is NOT designet for these temperatures, just the tip.

Is the Taylor digital thermometer useful?
I am thinking of doing some grilling and investing in the Taylor digital Thermometer. Is the thermometer useful for cooking and a worthwhile investment? The Weekend Warrior Taylor Digital fork Thermometer is the specific one I am interested in.

A thermometer is a good idea to let you know when things are done. Since the heat on a grill is variable, you can't go by time. Personally, I think that the fork thermometer is an unnecessary gimmick. Get a fork that does forking well, and a thermometer that measures temperatures well. Combine the two into one device and it won't do either thing well. I like the probe thermometers. (Taylor makes them, too.) You put them in, set the temperature, and they beep when they're done. They even make models with wireless, so you can walk away from the grill for a bit and have it notify you. (Which seems silly, since you had better not leave a grill unattended.) Most pro chefs recommend the instant read thermometers instead. They have finer points, so they make a smaller hole in the meat, so you use less juice. Personally, I like the probes because it means I don't have to keep opening the grill, letting out all that useful heat and tasty smoke.

How do I calibrate a Taylor 9942 thermometer?
It comes with a user manual, but I've somehow lost that. When I stick it in boiling water, it reads 290 degrees F, so I believe I need to recalibrate it. Oops. Make that a Taylor 9842. I've lost the recalibration instructions.

Old Taylor Thermometer, pic included, what is the center knob for?
I found this old thing in my attic and it seems to be accurate. But i am dieing to know, what is that center knob for? Do you think this thing uses mercury to tell the temp and stuff? http://s1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd413/Andy_Bradford/?action=view¤t=DSCN1907.jpg

Barometric pressure is the Center Gauge. The Knob is adjustable for the pressure needle. You set the gold needle over the Red needle. Then when the pressure changes you can see the direction of barometric pressure, UP or DOWN. The Temp surely uses Mercury. This appears to be a home decor model from the 50's early 60's is my guess. I have supplied links below to help you with the history of the Instrumentation. Actual Value? Find the Buyer? Maybe $35.00 Good Luck.

Automobile insurance NEVER pays for maintenance and repair issues, unless the repairs needed are the result of a collision, vandalism, or similar. For these repairs, you pay all of the $700 out of your own pocket.
